The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed that 3,590 prisoners are currently on death row in Nigeria’s detention centers.
This figure represents a significant portion of the total number of inmates in the country, which stands at 84,741, according to NCoS Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Correctional Services, Abubakar Umar.
The majority of prisoners in custody are awaiting trial, which poses a significant challenge to the service due to their high number.
However, the service is taking steps to address this issue and ensure speedy legal treatment for those awaiting trial.
In addition to the condemned prisoners, there are also 21,900 prisoners serving life sentences and 57,750 prisoners awaiting trial.
