Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m relay team has been disqualified from the final at the Paris Olympic Games. The team, consisting of Emmanuel Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Dubem Amene, and Chidi Okezie, initially finished their heat in a season’s best time of 2 minutes 59.81 seconds, placing second behind France, who clocked in at 2 minutes 59.53 seconds. Belgium secured the third automatic qualifying spot with a time of 2 minutes 59.84 seconds.
However, it was later determined that one of the Nigerian runners crossed into another lane, causing a South African athlete to trip. As a result, Nigeria’s spot in the final was forfeited and awarded to South Africa.
The Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m team had hoped to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors who won bronze in 1984, gold in 2000, and bronze again in 2004 at the Los Angeles, Sydney, and Athens Olympics, respectively.
