  • Meteorological agency issues flood alert for July 2025 across 20 states

  • Advises residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer grounds

  • Urges clearing of drainage systems, preparation of emergency kits

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood warning for July 2025, listing Lagos, Sokoto, Benue and 17 other states as high-risk zones.

In its advisory released on Monday, NiMet warned that the onset of heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding in parts of Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

The agency advised residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground if necessary and urged communities to clear blocked drainage systems to allow free flow of water.

“Currents can be deceptive, and hidden hazards may pose significant dangers. Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas,” NiMet said.

It recommended households prepare emergency kits with non-perishable food, water, first aid items, a flashlight and a power bank to mitigate the risks associated with flash floods.

The alert, based on the agency’s Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), is aimed at supporting state governments and residents in preventing loss of lives and property.
