The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed all civil servants in Akwa Ibom State to begin an indefinite strike in response to the surge in fuel prices.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the strike, which began on Thursday, was called in response to the alarming surge in fuel prices, which have skyrocketed to N2,500 per litre in the state.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), in collaboration with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTDs), had earlier enforced a nationwide shutdown of independent petrol stations.

During the shutdown, many fuel-laden tankers were seized by military personnel from Operation Delta Safe.

The NLC revealed that it is frustrated with what it described as a lack of concrete action from the state government to address the ongoing fuel crisis.

They accused the government of failing to implement necessary measures to ease the suffering of the people.

In a statement, the NLC urged Governor Umo Eno to swiftly resolve the fuel crisis and ensure the protection of workers’ rights.

NLC also called for the establishment of a task force to investigate the circumstances leading to the seizure of the fuel tankers.
