  • NLC has forced the Federal Government to reduce the proposed 50% telecommunications tariff hike to 35%.

  •  The reduction was agreed upon during a meeting between government representatives and the NLC at the office of the National Security Adviser.

  •  The NLC had threatened to shut down the operations of telecommunications companies nationwide if the tariff hike was not reversed.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has successfully negotiated a reduction in the proposed 50% telecommunications tariff hike to 35%.

This development follows a meeting between government representatives and the NLC at the office of the National Security Adviser on Friday, February 21, 2025.

According to sources, the meeting started around 4 pm and ended about 7 pm, with NLC representatives insisting that the tariff hike must be withdrawn.

After much pressure, the government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) agreed to a 15% reduction.

The NLC had earlier expressed outrage over the hike in tariff by telecommunications companies, despite an earlier agreement reached with the Federal Government and the NCC.

In a communique, the NLC stated, “If the telecommunications companies fail to revert to the old tariff by the end of February 2025, a total shutdown of their operations nationwide will commence from March 1, 2025.”

The communique, signed by the President and General Secretary of Congress, Joe Ajaero and Emma Ugboaja, respectively, directed NLC State Councils and industrial union affiliates to commence immediate sensitization and mobilization of their members and the general public within their jurisdictions.

The NLC had also directed workers and citizens to boycott the services of MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February 2025, and to suspend the purchase of data from these companies.
