  • NLC has shelved its planned protest scheduled for March 1, 2025, after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government.

  • The agreement involves a 35% increase in telecom tariffs, a reduction from the initially proposed 50% hike.

  • The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has welcomed the reduction, but called for more relief measures to ease the burden on consumers.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shelved its planned protest scheduled for March 1, 2025, after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government on a 35% increase in telecom tariffs.

According to sources within the NLC, the union and the Federal Government formed a 10-member committee to deliberate and finalize the agreement.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had initially announced a 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs on January 20, 2025.

However, after negotiations with the NLC, the proposed hike was reduced to 35%. The Chairperson of the Lagos State chapter of the NLC, Funmi Sessi, had previously condemned the Federal Government’s decision to approve the tariff hike, calling it an unfair burden on already struggling Nigerians.

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has welcomed the reduction in the proposed tariff hike.

The President of NATCOMS, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said, “I believe it is 35%, but this is based on what I heard from sources… We fought, and at least a 15% reduction is something.”

However, Ogunbanjo called for more relief measures to ease the burden on consumers, saying, “We should consider further reductions to cushion the impact on subscribers.”
