NLC Warns Governors Against Dictatorial Minimum Wage Plans, Threat to National Economy

NLC, TUC Gives Govs Ultimatum on N35k Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has cautioned state governors against attempting to unilaterally determine the minimum wage, describing the move as dictatorial and harmful to the national economy.

In a statement, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah emphasized that the minimum wage is a collective agreement ensuring a minimum standard of living for workers, and any arbitrary decision undermines this principle.

The NLC warned that allowing governors to pay workers whatever they deem fit would negate the concept of a national minimum wage and threaten the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The union urged governors to respect the established model and engage in constructive dialogue to ensure a fair and equitable minimum wage for all workers.

Upah emphasized that it is crucial to remind governors that the national minimum wage is distinct from the individual pay structures implemented by states, which reflect their unique financial capabilities and circumstances.

He further noted that the diversity in pay structures highlights the flexibility inherent in the system, allowing states to remunerate their workers in accordance with their financial realities.”
