The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the upward review of remuneration for political office holders proposed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

The union described the move as a direct threat to social stability, warning that it could deepen poverty among Nigerians, most of whom are classified as multi-dimensionally poor.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, criticised RMAFC Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Usman, dismissing his justification for the increase as inadequate and arguing that the policy turns public office into a pathway for wealth rather than service.

The labour union noted the salary review comes at a time when civil servants face stagnation, with the N70,000 minimum wage still in force despite rising costs of living.

The union highlighted that previous wage adjustments for civil servants were below 50 percent, while political office holders reportedly received increases exceeding 800 percent.

NLC called for the current earnings of political office holders to be made public and for any proposed benchmarks to be disclosed. The union urged RMAFC to suspend the exercise immediately to prevent what it termed “a potential tsunami” of public outrage.
