Warns of collapse from tinnitus, hypertension, and sleep deprivation
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has raised alarm over what he described as imminent danger to his life in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging neglect of life-threatening medical conditions.
Letter to NMA
In a letter of complaint to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) titled “The Danger of Tinnitus and Sleep Deprivation”, Kanu warned that he faces a constant risk of stroke, collapse, or sudden death.
“Among the gravest threats to my survival today is tinnitus. The incessant chirping in my ears robs me of sleep, sometimes making rest completely impossible. It exacerbates my hypertension, magnifies chest pain, fainting risks, and undermines my body’s natural capacity to heal,” Kanu wrote.
He revealed that he is also battling multiple ailments, including liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, and white matter disease, alongside sleep apnea.

Allegations Against DSS Doctors
The IPOB leader accused a DSS doctor, Nasiru Mohammed, of falsifying his medical records.
“From the moment he assumed control, Dr Nasiru Mohammed began falsifying my test results, recording normal potassium levels when in reality they were dangerously low,” he alleged.
Kanu said despite over 50 blood samples being taken, his health has not improved, while symptoms such as chest pains, nosebleeds, fainting, swollen feet, and headaches persist.
Blocked Physicians and Intervention
He further accused DSS of intimidating his longtime physician, Dr Cfine, by barring him from access.
According to him, only the intervention of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a renowned surgeon, prevented him from collapsing in custody.
Kanu noted that under Aghaji’s care, his potassium levels rose slightly, leading to some relief in his symptoms, though tinnitus and sleep deprivation remain severe.
“It is no exaggeration to say that without Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji’s intervention, my health would have deteriorated beyond recovery. Yet instead of supporting him, the DSS has subjected him to the same pattern of intimidation used against Dr Cfine,” he stated.
Plea for Urgent Medical Care
Kanu appealed to the NMA to intervene, stressing that continued neglect of his medical conditions demonstrates a “reckless disregard” for his life.
The DSS has not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
