Tension is mounting in parts of Ghana following the recognition of Eze Chukwudi Ihenetu as the traditional leader of the Igbo community in the country, a move that has sparked protests and triggered heated debate over cultural sovereignty and the role of foreign traditional institutions.
Angry reactions, particularly from youth groups in Accra and the Eastern Region, followed the circulation of images showing Eze Ihenetu’s ornate palace in Accra, complete with traditional regalia and architecture typically associated with royalty.

Protesters carried signs with messages like “No Foreign Thrones in Ghana” and “Honour Our Heritage,” arguing that allowing a foreign monarch to operate within Ghana disrespects the country’s deeply rooted chieftaincy system. Ghana Web reported that demonstrators believe such developments threaten Ghana’s sovereignty and could open the door to the establishment of unrecognized parallel authorities.
Although the Eze Ndi Igbo title is viewed as symbolic within Igbo diaspora communities globally, many Ghanaians say it sets a troubling precedent. Concerns have also emerged over unconfirmed reports suggesting the possibility of a designated Igbo settlement or “kingdom” being developed in parts of the country.
“This is a disturbing development creeping up in Ghana,” a concerned Ghanaian said in a video posted by BIGMAN TV. “Ghana is a sovereign country. Our kings and chiefs have historical roots tied to our lands. We cannot accept foreign thrones that might infringe on our sovereignty.”
Fuel was added to the fire when a video surfaced online showing media personality Captain Smart kneeling before Eze Ihenetu during a public ceremony. The footage quickly went viral and attracted a wide range of reactions across social media.
More controversy followed claims that Eze Ihenetu had expressed interest in establishing a 50-acre settlement for Igbos in Old Ningo. Though the proposal has not been officially confirmed, it has led to calls for government intervention.
Some citizens are now urging the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to step in and provide clarity on the legal standing of foreign royal titles within Ghana’s borders.
Reacting to the public outcry, Eze Ihenetu maintained that the title carries no political weight or territorial ambitions. “The throne of the Diasporan Igbo in Ghana is meant to protect, defend, and project the Igbo people and Nigerians as a whole,” he said in a recent interview. “We have no political authority or territorial ambitions in Ghana. This is purely cultural.”
