Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that there is “no need for Biafra again,” saying the South-East is now fully integrated into Nigeria’s national development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Umahi made the statement while inspecting major federal projects across the region, pointing to massive road construction as proof of renewed inclusion.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the South-East, Umahi dismissed separatist calls, arguing that feelings of marginalisation have eased due to what he described as unprecedented federal attention to the region.

“There will be no need for Biafra again,” Umahi said.

“In the past, our people felt marginalised, and that was why some agitated for Biafra. But today, we are fully integrated into the mainstream of Nigeria.”

The former Ebonyi State governor expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, noting that the South-East is “comfortable and happy” with the current administration.

“We are comfortable with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are very happy with the integration,” he added.

Umahi listed several long-abandoned federal road projects that have now received renewed funding and attention. According to him, some of the projects had stalled for over 15 years before the Tinubu administration stepped in.

One of the major projects includes a section of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway being handled by RCC at a cost of ₦202 billion, expected to be completed by February next year. Another 72-kilometre road handled by SKCC, costing ₦150 billion, has already received 30 percent payment.

“You can see the joy it has brought,” Umahi said.

The minister also revealed that the federal government is focusing on durable concrete roads designed to last 50 to 100 years, comparing them to the coastal highway project.

Key projects highlighted include:

  • Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway
  • Owerri–Onitsha Expressway
  • Section 2B of the Second Niger Bridge (₦176 billion)
  • Enugu–Abakaliki Road (₦172 billion)
  • A ₦424 billion legacy road project linking Ebonyi State to the Benue border

“These are the reasons why we no longer have any justification to agitate for Biafra,” Umahi stated.

On politics, Umahi urged leaders from the South-East to pursue relevance through strategy rather than emotional statements.

“We cannot reclaim our rightful place by sentiment or venomous words. It must be through realism and strategy,” he said.

He described his support for Tinubu and recent political realignments in the region as deliberate steps aimed at long-term inclusion.

Concluding, Umahi described the current moment as a turning point for the South-East.

“This is our time. God has used President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reintegrate our people,” he said.
