The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has thrown its weight behind the creation of state police, calling on the National Assembly to accelerate the legislative process needed to establish it as a way of strengthening security nationwide.
In a communique issued at the end of its meeting on Saturday, and read by the Forum’s Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, the governors stated, “The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off.”

According to a press release from Mamman Mohammed, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Yobe State Governor, the governors also agreed to improve inter-state border surveillance as part of coordinated efforts to tackle insurgency, banditry, and other criminal threats.
The Forum acknowledged the Federal Government’s role in addressing Nigeria’s security and infrastructural challenges and reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Nigeria Governors Forum for a more unified and effective response to insecurity.
