The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has unveiled plans to galvanise Nigerians for a peaceful protest on 1st October 2024.

This announcement was made by the group’s Director of Public Communications, Hussaini Shuaibu, in a statement released in Kaduna on Monday.

Shuaibu articulated that the protest aims to hold the government accountable for the persistent economic challenges plaguing the nation, with northern Nigeria bearing the brunt of these hardships.

He stressed that the protest is rooted in the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens, referencing sections 38 to 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee free association, expression of views, and the right to peaceful mobilisation.

Despite the government’s assurances to address the issues raised during the August 2024 demonstrations, Shuaibu revealed that the situation has deteriorated in the subsequent two months.

He said:
“The government promised to address the issues raised during the protests, but instead of progress, the situation has worsened.”

Shuaibu further stated that the NYCN feels compelled to act, particularly as northern Nigeria has been the hardest hit by these economic and political crises.

He added;
“We are mobilising and sensitising the people to come out and continue to protest peacefully against the unbearable hardship until the government agrees to act responsibly and respond to the issues promptly and decisively.”

The Independence Day protest, according to the NYCN, is not merely symbolic but a necessary step to “prick the conscience” of Nigerian leaders.

Shuaibu concluded:
“Since the government seems overwhelmed by these responsibilities, it is our duty to ensure we have a better Nigeria that we all can be proud of.”
