The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken disciplinary action against El-Kanemi Warriors, slapping the club with a N3.5 million fine following a series of security breaches during their heated home game against Ikorodu City.

This latest crackdown adds to the NPFL’s growing list of sanctions aimed at curbing fan violence and reinforcing matchday security in Nigerian football.

This move comes after multiple incidents disrupted the game, including supporter misconduct, vandalism, and objects thrown onto the pitch.

Stadium Closed to Fans for the Rest of the Season

As part of the sanctions, the El-Kanemi Warriors Stadium in Maiduguri will remain closed to spectators for the rest of the current season.

The NPFL’s disciplinary committee made this decision to send a strong message about the league’s zero-tolerance stance on disorderly conduct and threats to safety.

The stadium ban is expected to impact the club’s home advantage and revenue from matchday attendance, which could affect their performance and fan morale going forward.

What Triggered the NPFL’s Disciplinary Measures?

  • Vandalism of Visiting Team’s Vehicle

Following the final whistle, El-Kanemi supporters reportedly attacked and damaged a vehicle belonging to Ikorodu City.

This post-match incident was a key factor that prompted the NPFL’s fine and stadium ban.

  • Unsafe Matchday Behavior

During the match, fans were seen throwing objects onto the pitch, disrupting gameplay and endangering players, referees, and officials.

The NPFL disciplinary committee flagged this as a serious breach of safety regulations.

Club Directed to Respond to NPFL Ruling

El-Kanemi Warriors must now submit a formal response to the league, either accepting the disciplinary measures or requesting a hearing before the NPFL’s disciplinary panel.

The league emphasized that all clubs are responsible for the behavior of their fans and must enforce strict security protocols to avoid future sanctions.

NPFL Tightens Grip on Club Security Standards

This is not the first time the NPFL has fined a club for security-related offenses.

In recent months, the league has significantly ramped up enforcement against teams whose fans breach conduct rules or create unsafe match environments.

The Nigeria Premier Football League’s firm stance signals a commitment to creating a safer and more professional football culture in the country.

These sanctions aim to deter unruly fan behavior and encourage clubs to invest in proper security arrangements.
