NRC confirms Abuja–Kaduna passenger trains will resume operations

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that the Abuja–Kaduna passenger train service will resume operations next week, following the completion of safety inspections and repairs on the derailed track.
The service was suspended after a derailment occurred on August 26, 2025, forcing hundreds of passengers to seek alternative means of travel along the corridor.

Confirming the development, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, disclosed that engineers and technical teams had worked round the clock to restore infrastructure and rolling stock to internationally approved safety standards.
“We have worked tirelessly to ensure both the infrastructure and rolling stock are restored to the highest safety standards in line with global best practices,” Unyimadu said.

The NRC spokesperson revealed that out of the 583 passengers on board the affected train, 512 have been refunded, with efforts ongoing to reach the remaining passengers who have not been contacted.
“The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of our esteemed passengers and assures the general public that their safety, comfort, and satisfaction remain our top priority,” he said.
Mr Unyimadu commended the Federal Ministry of Transportation, security agencies, media, and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring the recovery and repair work was completed within the set timeframe.
He added that details of the official resumption date and train schedules would be released in the coming days.
