The Portuguese coach, who received a new contract this summer after guiding Forest into the Europa League, is the first top-flight manager to lose his job this season.
Meanwhile, tensions between the 51-year-old manager and the club surfaced in August.
The former Porto’s goalkeeper and manager Nuno Espirito Santo said his relationship with co-owner Evangelos Marinakis was “not the same” and “not as good as it was [last season]”.
He also criticised the club’s transfer policy, labelling the squad “unbalanced” and ill-prepared.
“I said it, and I don’t regret it.” – the former Tottenham Hotspur’s manager added.
Reports say Marinakis was angered by those public remarks and chose to make a swift change.
Edu Gaspar’s arrival in the club’s football structure figured in the dispute; Edu and chief football officer Ross Wilson will now oversee the search for a replacement.
Names linked to the vacancy include Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Mauricio Pochettino and Marco Silva.
Forest have four points from three games and travel to Arsenal this weekend.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s final match in charge was a 3–0 home defeat to West Ham on 31 August.
The club has now signalled it wants a fresh direction.
