Dispute follows temporary shutdown of depots over unionisation rights
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Friday accused Dangote Petroleum Refinery of undermining its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch, resisting unionisation, and promoting a parallel drivers’ association.
In a statement signed by NUPENG National Executive President Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union dismissed a Dangote press release as “an unconscionable capitalist falsehood aimed at crushing NUPENG.”

The dispute escalated after Dangote’s newly recruited drivers for its 4,000 CNG-powered trucks were allegedly instructed to remove NUPENG stickers and display logos of the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA), reportedly created by management. NUPENG claimed the company has attempted to sponsor parallel union structures since 2023.
The union also warned that Dangote’s free nationwide petroleum delivery—a move the company termed a business incentive—was designed to stifle competition and coerce drivers into the company-controlled association.
NUPENG called on Nigerians and the international community to defend workers’ constitutional rights to freedom of association and unionisation.
