The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially debunked rumors that Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as “Raye,” was denied her Certificate of National Service (CNS) because of her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement released on Sunday, NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu clarified that the certificate was withheld due to a routine disciplinary matter, not political reasons.

“Contrary to these claims, Raye is one of 131 corps members whose CNS was withheld not as punishment for dissent, but for valid disciplinary reasons,” Embu explained.
She added that Raye’s service year was extended by two months because she failed to attend the mandatory April biometric clearance. “Specifically, her service year was extended by two months because she failed to attend the April biometric clearance, as required by the NYSC Bye-Laws,” the statement said.
The NYSC stressed that such extensions are standard and fairly applied to all corps members who miss the clearance deadline. The scheme denied any political motivation behind the decision, emphasizing that “this extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case, and the principle of equal treatment was only applied in this case.”
Raye, who served in Lagos State, first drew public attention after sharing a viral video expressing frustration with Nigeria’s economic challenges. She recently claimed on Instagram that she and other corps members were refused their certificates.
However, she disputed the NYSC’s claim regarding the biometric clearance. According to Raye, “I had presented myself for clearance but was repeatedly told by my Local Government Inspector to wait.” She also alleged that the inspector “refused to clear me, confiscated my file, and asked me to leave the office.”
The situation continues to generate debate, but the NYSC maintains that its actions followed established procedures without political bias.
