Prof. Jerry Gana received a rare honour on Sunday night as prominent political leaders, associates and former presidents gathered in Abuja to celebrate his 80th birthday. The event, which also featured the unveiling of a book titled Jerry Gana, Stewardship and Integrity written by Simon Musa, turned into a night of glowing tributes.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Gana as an exceptional figure in Nigerian politics and public life. He praised him for his clarity of thought, honesty and devotion to excellence in any assignment.

“He is a man of clean, clear ideas and clean, clear behaviour. Whatever task you give him, he will always give his best,” Obasanjo said.
The former president added that in a world where many wrong deeds are often justified in the name of politics, Gana remained a rare example of uprightness and sincerity.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also joined in the tributes, celebrating Gana as an elder statesman whose life represents selfless service and national inspiration. He lauded him for spending his life shaping public policy, nurturing democracy, and contributing to governance.
Jonathan described Gana’s 80 years as “a symbol of purposeful leadership.”
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, represented by former Benue State University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, reviewed the book and noted that it captured Gana’s public and personal journey across several decades. He, however, pointed out that the book left unanswered questions about Gana’s role in several landmark political chapters.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Tanimu Turaki, SAN, described Gana as “a politician’s politician,” praising his credibility and influence in both national politics and public service. He insisted that Gana’s exceptional record and integrity had made him “an institution in Nigeria’s political history.”
Other dignitaries, including former governors Abdulaziz Yari and Aliyu Babangida, also celebrated Gana’s role in building democratic values and strengthening leadership culture in Nigeria. They urged that his contributions be preserved and shared widely for future generations.
The ceremony climaxed with the cutting of the birthday cake, as the celebrant expressed gratitude to guests, authors and organisers for honouring him. Prof. Gana thanked all who had worked with him over the decades and prayed for the nation’s progress and unity.
