Labour Party’s Peter Obi says presidency should be one term of five years, like South Korea

Says current two-term system makes leaders focus on re-election instead of governance

Cites Lincoln, Kennedy, and Mandela as proof that great legacies don’t need multiple terms
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has called for a constitutional change to limit Nigeria’s presidency to a single five-year term without re-election.
Speaking during a visit to the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, Mr Obi said such a system similar to South Korea’s would compel any president to focus on delivering results within the short timeframe.
Mr Obi criticised the current two-term allowance, arguing that most leaders spend their first year in office on governance but dedicate the rest of their tenure to plotting for re-election. He stressed the need to “stop it” and “face the real job.”

He maintained that long stays in power often lead to corruption, referencing past leaders like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who left strong legacies without multiple terms.
However, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has dismissed the one-term idea, saying any politician proposing it “needs psychiatric examination.”
