The iconic boxer and ex-national coach Obisia Nwankpa – best known as “Golden Gloves” died in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, at 75.
Obisia Nwankpa was celebrated for his quick talent and unwavering passion, both as a fighter and coach, influencing wave after wave of Nigerian boxers.
Talking to PREMIUM TIMES, Rafiu Ladipo, President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), shared:

“This is another big blow for us. Obisia deserves to be immortalised in this country because he gave his all to boxing.”
Obisia’s body has been taken to a local mortuary while his family gets ready for the funeral. The NBB of C is prepared to help the family once they reach out.

> “The family has not yet contacted us, but once they do, we will do what is expected of us,” Mr. Ladipo assured.

Mr. Ladipo believes Obisia’s efforts deserve a spot in Nigeria’s Sports Hall of Fame.
