Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami has expressed joy after Victor Osimhen broke his long-standing international goal record for the Super Eagles.
The Napoli striker scored twice in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Rwanda in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, increasing his international tally to 25 goals.
With this feat, Osimhen moves past Odegbami’s 23-goal record, which had stood for 44 years, making him Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer behind the late Rashidi Yekini, who leads with 37 goals.
Reacting to Osimhen’s achievement, Odegbami acknowledged the significance of the moment and expressed his admiration for the young striker’s progress.
Odegbami said:
> “Osimhen has finally overtaken me, and I think that is good because the record has been standing for a very long time. I am very happy for him, and I want to say good luck to him,”
> “He is still young and has a long way to go.”
Osimhen’s Impressive Form and the Chase for Yekini’s Record
Osimhen has been in exceptional form both for Nigeria and his club.
The Napoli striker has been dominant in front of goal, consistently delivering top-class performances.
He previously equaled Odegbami’s 23-goal record in November 2024 during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in an AFCON 2025 qualifier, scoring with a powerful header in his 38th cap.

Against Rwanda, Osimhen continued his brilliance by converting Ademola Lookman’s free-kick, showing his sharp instincts inside the box.
His performances in AFCON qualifiers have been particularly outstanding, including two hat-tricks in 2023.
With just 12 more goals, Osimhen is edging closer to matching Yekini’s legendary record of 37 goals, which has remained untouched since 1998.
Given his current form, he is well-positioned to become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the near future.
Odegbami Applauds Super Eagles’ Performance
Beyond Osimhen’s personal achievement, Odegbami also commended the Super Eagles for their convincing display against Rwanda.
He believes the team’s performance was one of their best in recent years.
> “I am really impressed with the Eagles’ performance in Kigali. That is their most convincing win in 10 years,” he added.
With the World Cup qualifiers in full swing, the Super Eagles will look to build on this momentum.
If Osimhen maintains his goal-scoring form, he could soon etch his name in Nigerian football history as the country’s greatest-ever goal scorer.
