The Ogulagha community, in partnership with the Godfrey Tare Pondi Educational Foundation, has officially flagged off the Ogulagha Community Integrated Waste Management Scheme (OCIWAMS), a pioneering initiative tagged #ProjectKeepOgulaghaCleanGreen

The ceremony, held at the Ogulagha Community Secretariat, drew community leaders, youths, women’s groups, environmental advocates, and other invited guests.

A keynote address delivered by Comrade Victor Isereke, Secretary of the Godfrey Tare Pondi Educational Foundation, who spoke on behalf of the key sponsor, pledged the NGO’s commitment to pursue clean communities across the Niger Delta.

“Our support for this initiative goes beyond sponsorship. It is an investment in the health, dignity, and future of the Ogulagha people. A clean community is a foundation for growth.

“OCIWAMS is proof that local communities can lead the way in solving environmental challenges. What we begin here today will echo as a model for other parts of the Niger Delta,” Isereke said.

Speaking at the occasion, community leaders led by Comrade Bright Guwor, the Ogulagha chairman, described the scheme as a turning point in environmental protection and public health for Ogulagha.

In their remarks, youth leaders and women’s groups pledged active participation in the project, stressing that a cleaner and healthier Ogulagha is a shared responsibility.

In his presentation, the OCIWAMS Team Lead, Mr. Humphrey Oluku highlighted the dangers of improper waste disposal.

He noted that coastal communities contribute a significant share of the waste that forms part of the more than 11 million tons of pollution entering waterways each year.

Mr. Oluku stressed that unchecked practices not only threaten marine life but also endanger livelihoods and public health in riverine settlements such as Ogulagha.

The flag-off ended with a symbolic unveiling of waste management equipment, including disposing trucks, waste bins, directional signage, etc.

The Godfrey Tare Pondi Educational Foundation was widely praised for its role in making the scheme possible.

Speakers acknowledged the Foundation’s commitment to education, awareness, and sustainable community development.
