Strong Words Backed by Stronger Actions
Speaking during a visit to the athletes’ camp at Babcock University in Ilisan-Remo, Governor Abiodun made it clear: this is not just about showing up, it is about winning.
“Once you win a medal, you will be rewarded instantly,” he said firmly. “We are not here to merely participate; we are here to make our mark.”
His words were not empty promises. Abiodun stressed the importance of motivation and recognition, tying Ogun’s sporting ambition to a broader legacy of athletic excellence.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports infrastructure and athlete development throughout the state.
A Festival That Transcends Sports
First held in 1973, the National Sports Festival has long stood as more than just a competition but also a symbol of national unity and a celebration of Nigeria’s cultural and athletic diversity.
The festival also serves as a breeding ground for emerging talents, many of whom go on to represent the nation on global stages.
This year’s edition, themed Gateway Games 2024, began on May 16 and will run until May 30, 2025.

For the second time in its history, Ogun State is hosting the games, with events spread across Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ikenne, and Ijebu-Ode.
Athletes React with Pride and Gratitude
Unsurprisingly, the announcement sparked joy among the athletes.
For many, it was more than just about the money—it was validation.
Koasarat Olabisi, who competes in abula for Ogun, shared her feelings.
“When you know the government truly sees and supports you, you want to give everything on the field.
It builds confidence, and that makes all the difference.”
Beyond Rewards: A Sustainable Vision for Sports
Governor Abiodun’s incentive scheme is being praised as a forward-thinking strategy.
By directly rewarding athletic success, the state is setting a precedent for recognizing effort, performance, and commitment.
More importantly, it signals that sports are not just extracurricular—they are a viable, supported path for young Nigerians.
As the Gateway Games continue, Ogun’s athletes carry not only the pride of their state but the assurance that their hard work is valued and their victories celebrated.
