  • Ohanaeze Ndigbo has warned President Bola Tinubu that ignoring non-violent Biafra agitators may cost him southeast support in the 2027 elections.

  • The group described continued silence on the issue as “one of the gravest strategic errors” of the current administration.

In a blunt and politically charged warning, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s continued refusal to engage with non-violent Biafra agitators could cost him any chance of electoral support from the southeast in 2027.

The group described the government’s silence as “one of its gravest strategic errors.”

On May 27, 2025, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group released a statement urging Tinubu to open dialogue with peaceful Biafran advocates. The statement, marking Tinubu’s second anniversary in office, was signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chief Thompson Ohia. The group said Nigeria is facing its closest opportunity in five decades to resolve the Biafra conflict peacefully.

According to the statement, “Ohanaeze believes this is the closest Nigeria has come in 55 years to resolving the Biafra conflict.”

They warned that “It is a moment that should not be lost to silence, evasion, or political calculation.

The group criticized Tinubu’s administration for ignoring peaceful Biafra leaders. “If Tinubu had shown statesmanship by addressing the genuine grievances of the southeast, he would be celebrated today as a bridge-builder and unifier,” Ohanaeze stated.

They insisted that these groups “have maintained their advocacy without resorting to violence or inciting unrest.”

Ohanaeze also cast doubt on the political weight of southeast governors, saying, “Relying on defections or endorsements by governors will be a strategic misstep.”

They stressed, “These are often driven by self-preservation, not genuine loyalty. We’ve seen where that path led President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.”

Highlighting the shift in regional influence, the group said, “The dominant voice in the southeast today is not the governors — it is the non-violent pro-Biafra agitators who can mobilise opinion across all 774 LGAs.”

They cautioned that failure to act could push the southeast into opposition coalitions in 2027.

Call for Dialogue, Not Suppression

Ohanaeze declared, “The way forward is dialogue — not suppression. That is what every previous government has failed to do.”

They added that the agitators have shown openness to engagement: “They have extended a handshake of reconciliation to the president. It is time to reciprocate that gesture with political courage.”
