  • Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has defended the suspension of 18 elected local government chairmen by the State House of Assembly.

  • Okpebholo alleged that the suspended chairmen were involved in wasteful spending, including contributing N800 million monthly to environmental Security funding.

  • He also commended the acting chairmen and councillors for their commitment to upholding democratic values and promoting transparency.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has defended the suspension of 18 elected local government chairmen by the State House of Assembly.

Okpebholo Defends Suspension of Edo Council Chairmen

According to him, the suspension was necessitated when they refused to respond to a discovery that they remitted about N12 billion to some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 15 months.

Governor Okpebholo stated this when he hosted the acting chairmen and councillors of the 18 local government areas, who were in the Government House on a courtesy visit.

He commended the acting chairmen and councillors for their commitment to upholding democratic values and promoting transparency.

“When I came into the office, I had a meeting with the Accountant-General, and he showed me some books.

“Some of these spending had no explanation,” Governor Okpebholo said. “I picked interest in some of the spending because I saw an item which was tagged ‘Environmental security funding.’ I have never heard of that before, and the amount involved was huge, N800 million every month. These Chairmen were contributing this money and gave it to leaders of a party.”

The Governor noted that the suspended chairmen were engaged in wasteful spending, “even when our schools did not have teachers. When you get to primary schools, you find two or three teachers where you are supposed to have 10 to 12 teachers.”

The Edo State Assets Verification Committee has revealed its findings.

Recall that the Committee was set up by the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

According to the Committee, it has uncovered how the contract sum for a road project in the state was inflated from N8 billion to N16 billion by the immediate past government of Godwin Obaseki
