Ontario Freezes Donations Meant for Protest

Ontario, Canada’s second-largest province, has taken a significant step in its efforts to suppress ongoing protests.

The government announced that its petition to freeze millions of dollars donated through GiveSendGo was successful.

The Superior Court of Justice order prohibits anyone from distributing donations made through the website’s “Freedom Convoy 2022” and “Adopt-a-Trucker” pages.

According to Ivana Yelich, a spokeswoman for Premier Doug Ford, the order binding “all parties with possession or control over these donations” was issued Thursday afternoon.

Yelich alluded to a section of the Criminal Code that allows the Attorney General to seek restraint against any “offense-related property.”

The government’s strike was similar to Nigeria’s blockage of accounts that received cash and cryptocurrency during the EndSARS campaign in October 2020.

GoFundMe announced last Friday that more than $10 million raised for the Canada protests would be refunded.

After police and the local government complained that the demonstration had turned into an “occupation,” the site withdrew its support.

The organizers then used GiveSendGo. As of Thursday, “Freedom Convoy 2022” had raised $8.4 million, and “Adopt-a-Trucker” had raised $686,000.

On Thursday night, the Christian fundraising site condemned the government’s donation freeze on Twitter.

“Be aware of this! “Canada has ZERO jurisdiction over how we manage our funds here at GiveSendGo,” the company stated.

“All funds for EVERY campaign on GiveSendGo flow directly to the recipients of those campaigns, including The Freedom Convoy.”

Refusing to give up, the organizers are considering using Bitcoin to raise funds as the battle enters its third week.

Truck drivers stormed Ottawa in late January to protest COVID-19 vaccine rules and health restrictions. They’ve expanded into Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario.
