Open Grazing: Ortom Orders Herdsmen Out of Benue | Daily Report Nigeria

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue has ordered for herdsmen involved in open grazing out of the state.

The Governor also directed the Benue Livestock Guards to allow all cattle rearers engaging in open grazing to leave the state within two weeks.

Daily Report Nigeria recalls that the Livestock Guard was established by the Benue government to enforce compliance of the state’s anti-open grazing law.

Briefing newsmen at the end of a security meeting, Ortom said there was an influx of herdsmen into the state with a huge number of cattle as against the state’s anti-open grazing law.

According to the governor, the move was to reduce the high influx of livestock into the state as part of measures to ensure the people of the state lived in peace.

Ortom told newsmen, “We commend the President for condoling with Benue people as well as direct security agencies to apprehend perpetrators of this act.

“The Security agencies are duty bound to carry out this directive and I am waiting to see action that will culminate in to cessation of killings and restore peace in the State,” Ortom said.

The development is coming on the heels of recent attacks in the state by suspected herdsmen following the conclusion of the 2023 elections.

The attacks also attracted condemnation from the Presidency.
