Opposition alleges APC plotting advantage for 2027 polls.
Leaders of opposition political parties, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, have rejected the amended Electoral Act 2026 recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The opposition figures criticised the process leading to the passage of the legislation by the National Assembly, describing it as flawed and lacking transparency.

Speaking at a press briefing, NNPP chieftain Ajuri Ahmed alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress was working to position President Tinubu as the only viable presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ahmed insisted that available data shows that electronic transmission of election results is possible across polling units nationwide, questioning the need for the manual transmission option retained in the new law.
He also expressed concern over the speed with which the President signed the bill into law, noting that other important legislation did not receive similar urgency.
According to the opposition coalition, the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory Area Council election reflected why the ruling party hurried the amendment, describing the poll as a test the new INEC chairman allegedly failed.
The coalition maintained that the Electoral Act amendment could undermine electoral transparency if not reviewed before the 2027 general elections.
