Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has declared that Nigeria are ready to win AFCON 2025, insisting the team has the hunger, unity, and mindset needed to bring the trophy home after more than a decade of waiting.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s knockout-stage clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Osimhen said the Super Eagles arrived at the tournament with a single goal, to lift the AFCON trophy.

Nigeria last won the competition in 2013, when the late Stephen Keshi guided the team to victory over Burkina Faso. Since then, the Super Eagles have endured painful setbacks, including missing out on the 2015 and 2017 editions.
The closest Nigeria have come in recent years was at the 2023 AFCON, where Éric Chelle’s men reached the final but lost 2–1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, a defeat that still hurts the squad.
That disappointment, Osimhen said, has only strengthened their resolve.

“It will mean a lot, not just to me, but to the whole team and to Nigeria,” Osimhen told ESPN.
“It has been a long time since this trophy came to Nigeria, and every training session we remind ourselves why we are here; to win it.”
The African Footballer of the Year added that the players share a common desire and are pushing each other daily to stay focused on the ultimate prize.
“I want it as bad as every other country here,” he said.
“We come together every day with one objective; to make sure we achieve it.”
Nigeria will next face Mozambique’s Mambas in a Round of 16 showdown in Fes, with Osimhen expected to spearhead the attack as the Super Eagles chase a fourth AFCON title.
