Over 100 Persons Hospitalized as Expired Gas Contaminates Air in Kano | Daily Report Nigeria

A minimum of 120 people were hospitalised after toxic chemicals from an expired industrial gas cylinder contaminated the air in Mundadu, a surburb of Kano.

The expired gas is also said to have spread to close by neighborhoods in the area, Daily Trust reports.

According to local residents, the contamination occured on Friday evening when one Saifullahi gathered scrap metals and crushed for recycling.

Magaji Abdullahi, ward head of the area, while speaking on the incident said, “I was informed this evening that there was problem where Saifullahi Muhammad does his scrap metal collection business.”

The public relations officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, also confirmed the incident, revealing that many of the victims were rushed to different hospitals for medical attention.

“About 70 of them were taken to Jaen Primary Healthcare, while 50 were taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for treatment,” he said.

Abdullshi, however said no life has been lost in the incident so far from the victims who are mostly children and women.
