Abia State will host athletes from 14 countries for a landmark Para-Badminton Championship and the All-African Para-Badminton event in Umuahia, bringing a rare international spotlight to the South-East.

The two-week tournament opens on September 30 and runs through October 12, 2025.

Competitions will take place at the newly refurbished International Conference Centre.
Organisers expect roughly 150 international players and about 60 officials.
Teams arrive from Brazil, India and Peru, plus African delegations from Cameroon, Benin Republic, Tunisia and Egypt.
Smaller squads from Mauritius, Rwanda and Zimbabwe are also on the list.
State officials say they installed tournament-grade nets and playing mats to guarantee fair, safe contests for every classification.
Nwobilor Ananaba, Abia’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, sent Mr. Raymond Chima Ukwa to the briefing to say that the state is ready to welcome the worldwide para-badminton community.
The Badminton Federation of Nigeria president, Francis Orbih, thanked Governor Alex Otti for hosting the world and confirmed that organisers completed all key arrangements to run the event smoothly.
Jeff Shigoli, the CEO of the Badminton Confederation Africa, lauded Abia’s work and said that Nigeria is now one of only two other African countries to organize para-badminton events of this size which is a big step forward for the continent.
This Para-Badminton Championship gives participants from Nigeria and Africa important chances to get worldwide rankings and classifications.
It also draws media attention and sparks grassroots interest in para sport across the region.
Organisers of the Para-Badminton Championship aim for a lasting legacy in Abia: improved accessibility, stronger local coaching and more tournaments in the future.
