Confirming the incident, the State Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Ogoniba Ipigansi, said the collision occurred around about 9pm.

According to Ipigansi, the two boats were traveling in opposite directions in the Ogboinbiri-Amassoma coastline.

Eight out of nine passengers in the both boats died, leaving just a survivor. Meanwhile, just two bodies have been recovered as of press time.

Ipigansi blamed the accident on the drivers of the boats for being nonchalant with safety precautions and not carrying functional torchlight for the late-hour navigation.
