PDP Chairman Breaks Silence on Party Crisis | Daily Report Nigeria

The acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Iliya Damagum, has finally addressed the ongoing crisis in the main opposition party.

In a recent interview with Daily Trust, Damagum acknowledged the party’s fragmentation and internal conflicts, stating that he inherited the challenges and is working tirelessly to facilitate the healing process.

“I take the blame for the party’s shortcomings and ensure that the PDP remains indivisible,” Damagum said. However, he faces criticism for the party’s failure to address internal divisions and prepare for the 2027 elections.

The PDP has undergone three leadership changes in the past year, with Damagum being asked to remain in his role as acting chairman. The party is divided into factions led by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, and potentially Bala Mohammed, each with differing demands and aspirations.

Recent departures from the party, including Anyim Pius Anyim and Emeka Ihedioha, have further complicated the situation. Despite temporary stabilization, concerns linger about the party’s ability to reorganize and improve performance in the 2027 elections.

“The North-central zone is demanding Damagum’s removal, while 60 federal lawmakers have threatened to leave the party if he doesn’t resign,” a source revealed. As the party struggles to find a unified voice, Damagum’s leadership is under scrutiny.
