The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the suit filed by Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, former factional National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking recognition as the party’s secretary.
Judge Mohammed Umar ruled the suit unnecessary after Anyanwu’s tenure as PDP secretary expired in December 2025. Anyanwu had filed the suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Umar Damagun, former acting PDP National Chairman, among others.

At the hearing, Anyanwu’s counsel, U.C. Njemanze-Aku, informed the court that his client’s term had ended, making continuation of the suit inappropriate. INEC’s lawyer, Akintayo Balogun, supported dismissal and requested N1 million in costs.
Other defendants similarly sought costs, but the court refused to award any, citing circumstances beyond the parties’ control.
The case stemmed from a longstanding dispute over the PDP national secretary position after Anyanwu vacated the role to contest the 2023 Imo governorship election, which he lost. Legal wrangling ensued, including decisions by the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, ultimately leaving Anyanwu without claim to the office.
Judge Umar formally dismissed the matter without awarding costs, bringing a close to Anyanwu’s latest legal attempt to reclaim the PDP secretary position.
