APC now controls 70 Senate seats as PDP suffers fresh blow in both chambers
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another set of lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as four senators and three House of Representatives members formally defected during Wednesday’s plenary in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the senators’ resignation letters aloud during the session, with each citing “irreconcilable differences” and deepening internal crisis as their reason for abandoning the opposition party.
In response, Akpabio instructed the Clerk of the Senate to update the chamber’s records, effectively confirming the defections.

The move shifts the Senate’s power configuration, with APC now holding 70 seats, while PDP’s presence has dropped to 28. Minority parties in the red chamber include the Labour Party (5 seats), NNPP (1 seat), SDP (2 seats), and APGA (1 seat).

Similarly, in the House of Representatives, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the defection of three PDP lawmakers — two from Osun State and one from Edo State — during the day’s proceedings.
The defectors also blamed their exit on unresolved leadership wrangling within the PDP, which they claim has paralysed the party’s internal cohesion and public credibility.
The PDP, already struggling with internal factions, is now facing a deepening collapse in parliamentary strength, raising concerns about its viability as a functional opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
All seven defections were formally acknowledged and recorded in the plenary journals of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
