PDP Dismisses Claims of 2027 Election Exit, Says Party Fully Qualified

  • PDP says reports of non-participation in 2027 elections are false

  • Party insists no court ruling or legal barrier affects its eligibility

  • INEC’s acceptance of PDP candidates cited as proof of standing

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports suggesting it may be barred from participating in the 2027 general elections, describing the claims as misleading and unfounded.

The clarification follows speculations triggered by ongoing internal litigations linked to the party’s post-Ibadan national convention, which some reports claimed could prevent the PDP from fielding candidates nationwide.

Reacting, the PDP said it remains legally recognised and fully prepared to contest the 2027 polls across the country. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, stated that no court decision or internal party process has restricted the PDP from participating in elections.

Ememobong explained that the rumours were deliberately circulated to damage the party’s image, stressing that there is no legal or institutional obstacle against the PDP.

He pointed to recent electoral activities as evidence of the party’s valid status, noting that the PDP successfully submitted candidates’ names for the Abuja Area Councils election, which were accepted and validated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, INEC’s validation clearly confirms the party’s recognition and compliance with electoral requirements.

Addressing concerns surrounding the removal of the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Ememobong clarified that the issue stemmed from a legal dispute over the conduct of the party’s primary election, not from any disqualification of the PDP itself.

He explained that the matter is currently before the Court of Appeal following a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the Ekiti governorship primary over non-compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.

The PDP, however, maintained that the Ekiti case has no bearing on its overall ability to field candidates nationwide and reaffirmed its readiness to fully participate in the 2027 general elections.
