  • Wike’s faction had attempted to halt the convention through the courts but the high court in Oyo cleared the event to proceed.
  • Olabode George moved the expulsion motion, seconded by Bauchi PDP chairman.
  • Faction leaders, including Mao Ohabunwa, urged delegates to ignore the Ibadan convention.
  • Wike pledged continued support to party members while affirming his camp’s commitment.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday expelled Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Samuel Anyanwu, its suspended national secretary, Ayo Fayose, former Ekiti governor, and several others at the party’s national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. The decision followed a voice vote led by Bala Mohammed, chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, amid ongoing disputes between party factions.

The expulsion at the PDP national convention in Ibadan targeted not only Wike, Anyanwu, and Fayose but also Umar Bature, Ajibade Kamarudeen, Mao Ohabunwa, Uwachukuwu, George Turner, Dan Orbih, Mohammed Abdulrahman, Austin Nwachukwu, and Abraham Amah.

Olabode George, former PDP national vice-chairman (south), initiated the motion for expulsion, which was seconded by Samaila Buga, the PDP Bauchi State chairman. Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, put the matter to a voice vote, which was carried.

The Wike-led faction had previously sought to stop the convention through court intervention, but a high court ruling allowed the event to go ahead. Mao Ohabunwa, chairman of the board of trustees of Wike’s faction, described the convention as a mere “jamboree,” urging party members to stay away. He noted that Anyanwu had circulated a notification postponing the convention.

“We have met as the national working committee of PDP and reviewed our activities. We have agreed to obey all the court decisions on the Ibadan convention. So, we are not part of the exercise,” Ohabunwa said, adding that the convention should not be recognized legally.

Mohammed Abdulrahman, acting national chairman of Wike’s faction, echoed the call, urging delegates to focus on strengthening a united PDP across the 36 states and the FCT.

Meanwhile, Wike commended party members for their dedication and vowed continued support for their efforts. “I will continue to support you people; I won’t betray you. Our camp will always uphold the rule of law,” he affirmed.
