The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its final foothold in the Ondo State House of Assembly after its only two remaining members defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Former House Minority Leader, Olajide Oguntodu (Akure South 1 Constituency), and his deputy, Oluwatoyin Daodu (Akoko South West 1 Constituency), announced their exit from the PDP during Thursday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Olamide Oladiji, who welcomed them to the APC.

Their move follows the defection of two other PDP lawmakers just five weeks earlier, effectively wiping out the opposition party from the 26-member chamber.

In their resignation letters, the lawmakers said their decisions came after “extensive consultations” with family, constituents, and political leaders. They also pointed to deepening internal crises within the PDP as a key factor.

Mr Oladiji hailed the defections as a “significant milestone” in the state’s political landscape and urged the new APC lawmakers to strengthen the ruling party’s influence.

The PDP, once holding four seats at the start of the Assembly, has seen its ranks depleted by infighting and mass resignations. In July, thousands of members in the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency—along with their House of Representatives member, Festus Akingbaso—also crossed over to the APC.

The party recently elected a new state executive led by Victor Aisida, who vowed to rebuild and reunite the PDP, declaring: “The night of division is over, and the morning of revival is here.”
