APC now controls 74 seats in the Senate; PDP drops to 27.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday suffered another major setback as Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection, which took place during plenary at the National Assembly, was announced through a formal letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read aloud on the floor of the Senate.

In his letter, Senator Samaila attributed his decision to “the unending internal crisis and lack of direction” within the PDP, saying the situation has made it impossible for him to effectively represent his constituents.

“The unresolved leadership crisis in our party has continued to hinder my ability to serve the good people of Bauchi North. After due consultations, I have decided to join the APC to contribute meaningfully to national development,” the senator wrote.
The defection further tilts the Senate’s numerical composition in favour of the ruling party. With the latest switch, the APC now holds 74 seats, PDP 27, Labour Party 4, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) 2, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) 1, and Social Democratic Party (SDP) 1, bringing the total to 109 senators.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments across party lines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
More details are expected as the Senate resumes plenary sessions.
