  • Air Vice Marshal Fura resigns PDP membership, defects to ADC.

  • Ex-governorship aspirant cites “deep reflection, wide consultations.”

  • Defection seen as strategic blow to PDP in Nigeria’s North-East.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has been hit by another high-profile defection as Air Vice Marshal Shehu Adamu Fura (retd.), Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, officially announced his resignation and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a letter dated July 3, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Pantami Ward, Gombe Local Government Area, Fura said his decision followed “deep personal reflection and wide consultations.”

“This decision comes after deep personal reflection and wide consultations. It is born out of my desire to continue my political journey under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where I hope to contribute more effectively to the advancement of democratic values and good governance for national development,” Fura stated.

The defection is a significant setback for the PDP in Gombe, especially as the party struggles to consolidate its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fura, who came third in PDP’s 2023 governorship primaries, was instrumental in grassroots mobilisation and conflict resolution in the party. His leadership of the state reconciliation committee after the 2023 elections helped calm multiple internal disputes and retain some party loyalists.

Sources said that Fura’s departure is part of a growing wave of high-level defections rocking the PDP in recent months.

The ADC welcomed Fura’s defection, describing it as a “strategic gain” ahead of 2027. Party insiders said the retired Air Force officer would play a key role in ADC’s northern strategy, appealing to military elites and grassroots networks dissatisfied with Nigeria’s two dominant parties.

“Air Vice Marshal Fura brings experience, integrity, and strong grassroots connection, which are central to ADC’s mission to reposition Nigeria’s democracy,” a party spokesperson told reporters.
