Pepenazi, also known as Opeyemi Gbenga Kayode, a Nigerian singer who has transitioned into a pastor, has opened up about his journey of overcoming smoking, alcohol consumption, and the use of illicit substances with the help of God.
He revealed that his exposure to alcohol and drugs began during his time in the secular music industry, highlighting the misconception that these substances enhance creativity.
In a video message shared on his Instagram page, Pepenazi emphasized the importance of debunking the myth surrounding alcohol and drug use in creative industries.

“God delivered me from alcohol, illicit drugs and smoking. There’s a lie that the devil sells, for those who know, I had a career in the secular music industry for about a decade. And even before I became a professional artist, while I was still in the university, there’s this lie that the devil sells to you that before you can feel really better while you’re recording and even while you’re engaging with the opposite sex, the best way is to get high.
“And the devil sold this lie through me. That was how I started drinking alcohol and engaging in things that did not glorify the name of God.”
This revelation comes after Pepenazi’s brother, OAP Do2tun, recently disclosed in an interview that the artist, known for hits like ‘Illegal’, has left secular music behind to pursue a path in ministry.
