Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday, March 7, 2026, solidifying his new political home and quashing rumours of a return to the Labour Party.

Obi’s official registration with the ADC appears to be a direct response to these assertions. Sources close to the former presidential candidate said the timing was deliberate to halt what they described as misinformation about his political intentions.

Political observers note that Obi had been evaluating his next move for several weeks, receiving interest from multiple parties.

By joining ADC, he signals a clear direction ahead of the 2027 general elections, offering the party a significant boost with one of Nigeria’s most recognizable opposition figures.

Obi rose to prominence during the 2023 presidential election, where he finished third but garnered widespread support, especially among young voters.

Before his presidential bid, he governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, earning a reputation for fiscal prudence and infrastructure development. He later served as the PDP vice-presidential candidate in 2019 and joined the Labour Party in 2022.

Analysts suggest Obi’s move strengthens ADC, clarifies opposition dynamics, and positions the party as a potential key player in future coalition arrangements.

Social media users celebrated Obi’s decision under the hashtag #ObidientMovement, praising him for swiftly ending speculation and taking control of the narrative.
