Barely one week after Olamilekan Moshood Agbeleshe known as Laycon won himself N85 million in the just concluded Big Brother Naija Season 5, many young Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the rational behind winning such huge amount for being a housemate.

In its final week, the reality show had a record 900 million votes and while the Big Brother Lockdown season lasted, the Federal Government increased fuel prize and electricity tariff yet Nigerians were more concerned with what was going on the BBN house than the state of the nation.

Last week, the chief executive officer, MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, said the Big Brother Lockdown Season recorded the highest votes ever and that it cost N3.5 billion to put together the reality show which lasted for only 10 weeks.

This is the same company that have refused to allow DSTV and GOTV subscribers in Nigeria enjoy PAY-AS-YOU-GO/USE like their counterparts in other African countries but they can spend N3.5 Billion to host a reality show which most segments of the country believe has social, moral and economic value.

Last night, one of Nigeria’s finest breeds, Nnadozie Daniel posted on his social media account, “Anytime I remember that someone won 85 million naira for staying in a house kissing, gossiping, eating, quarreling, fighting, sleeping and having free sex, I bring out my certificates and use them to fan myself after all the threats from lecturers, sleepless nights and many troubles. See ehh this life nor balance at all!”

Last week, a young graduate from Katsina state identified as Usman Abubakar, reportedly burnt all his certificates because he was looking for jobs that were not available anywhere and MultiChoice, Betway, Pepsi, Innoson Motors and others didn’t care but they can bankroll a reality show in a country where many are living on per day billing.

According to reports on various Hausa Facebook pages which did not trend as it should have, the frustrated young man tore all the certificates and set them ablaze because he was unable to secure a job since graduation and no support from any quarter.

He gathered his NYSC Certificate, BSC Degree, WASC and everything else, tore them into pieces first, then set them on fire.

It would be recalled that, Usman is not the first Nigerian graduate to do this, in 2019, a graduate burnt all his certificates, saying school is the biggest scam in the world.

Again, that did not trend too. Instead, “School is a Scam” was trending; many people did not know that frustration led the young man to destroy his hard earned credentials.

According to the young man in 2019, going to school and acquiring all the certificates does not guarantee success, based on his own experience.
