Plateau Assembly Suspends LG Chairmen, Councillors

Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly has suspended Local Government Council chairmen and Councillors across the 17 Council areas of the State.

The House members suspended the LG officials during their plenary presided over by the Speaker, Abok Ayuba, following a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Langtang North-North constituency, Pirfa Tyem.

Moving the motion, which was supported by majority of the 24- member Assembly, the lawmaker said, “Whereas the leadership of the House is in receipt of a petition against the 17 local councils of Plateau, bordering on financial impropriety and misuse of office and whereas the leadership of the House requested the 17 local government councils via a letter dated 25th May 2023 and routed through the ALGON Chairman to submit for scrutiny all income and expenditure profile of the councils on 30th May, 2023, none of the local government councils honoured the said request to make submissions.

“Given the foregoing, therefore, I call on this Honourable House to resolve to request the Executive Governor of Plateau to direct the suspension of all the political structures at the local government levels, pending the conclusion of an investigation into the said petition and direct the suspended chiefs to hand over all government properties on their possession to the Directors of Personnel Management in their respective councils.”

The Speaker, who announced the suspension of the 17 LG chairmen after the motion was passed, directed the council officials to hand over all government properties in their possession to the Director of Personnel Management while an investigation into the allegations against them commences.
