The Police Command in Osun has arrested two young men who were administrators of a WhatsApp used to mobilise the #EndSARS protest in the state.

Further investigations revealed the arrested duo of Babawale Popoola and Fisayo Aderemi, were picked up in the Osogbo the state capital and have been in police detention since Thursday.

The police claims the duo were in the know of the series of looting that followed the protests and are demanding they provide their other group members.

The state’s police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest to newsmen, saying they played a role in the series of looting in the state.

On why they have not been arraigned before a court, she said “they are still being investigated. After the investigation, we will know what to do.”

Section 35 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution provides that the police should not detain any suspect for longer than 48 hours without a court order.

Several rights groups have also called on police against abuse of fundamental human rights.

The peaceful #ENDSARS protest across the country was hijacked by hoodlums who resorted to looting public properties and invasion of COVID-19 warehouses.

The Osun government imposed a curfew to cushion the activities of the hoodlums and ordered the arrest of suspected looters. Over 60 persons have so far been nabbed and remanded in Ilesha correctional prison in relation to the looting in the state.
