Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said the command received a distress report of an improvised explosive device (IED) detonating inside the mosque at about 6:00 pm on December 24, 2025.
“Five persons lost their lives, while thirty-five others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the statement said.
According to the police, the affected area was immediately cordoned off to ensure public safety, while emergency responders swung into action.
“The Borno State Police Command, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately activated a joint rescue operation with NEMA, SEMA, and other security agencies,” the statement added.

The injured victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and the State Specialist Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Preliminary investigations suggest the blast may have been a suicide attack.
“Early findings indicate a possible suicide bombing, based on the recovery of fragments believed to be from a suicide vest and witness accounts,” the police disclosed.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit has since carried out extensive checks around the scene to rule out the presence of secondary devices.
While assuring residents of safety, the command said normalcy has been restored and urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
“Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress,” the police said.
Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State have witnessed similar attacks over the years, linked to the prolonged insurgency that has claimed over 35,000 lives since it began more than a decade ago.
