Police Council Confirms Tunji Disu as Inspector-General of Police

The National Police Council on Monday confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.

The confirmation took place during a council meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja. Following the endorsement, Disu’s name will be transmitted to the Senate for screening and final confirmation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development shortly after the meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes.

“Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga said.

The meeting was held in line with provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider appointments of the Inspector-General of Police.

The council is chaired by the President and comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP.

Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing family reasons.

Top government officials in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
