Police operatives on Monday fired multiple tear gas canisters to disperse #FreeNnamdiKanu protesters who gathered around the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu.
The demonstrators had assembled opposite the hotel before being confronted by a heavy police and military presence. Witnesses said security operatives fired several rounds of tear gas and gunshots into the air to scatter the crowd.

The leader of the protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore, alongside several others, was seen fleeing the scene as the air thickened with tear gas smoke. It remained unclear as of press time whether any injuries were recorded.
There were no confirmed arrests following the police crackdown.
The protest comes amid renewed public and international calls for Kanu’s unconditional release, with increasing pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to either expedite the judicial process or free the separatist leader.
The Indigenous People of Biafra leader has remained in detention despite several court orders granting him bail, a situation that continues to stir widespread agitation in the South-East and among human rights groups.
