According to the statement, the security operation began around midnight on January 1, 2026, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. It involved Divisional Police Officers, tactical units, and patrol teams deployed to key flashpoints within the metropolis.

Police said the suspects took advantage of large crowds gathered to usher in the New Year, engaging in acts of disorder including blocking major roads, illegal car racing, reckless driving, throwing fireworks at pedestrians, and knocking down commuters.

The situation reportedly worsened when the hoodlums attacked police patrol teams, stoning officers, burning tyres, and deliberately blocking movement at major junctions, especially routes used by worshippers returning from crossover church services.

SP Bright said officers responded swiftly using lawful crowd-control measures to restore order and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“At the end of the operation, 43 suspects were arrested. Recovered items include 25 vehicles, eight tricycles, fireworks, hard drugs, and other dangerous weapons,” the police spokesman said.

He added that all suspects are currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing. Those found culpable will be charged to court.

The Delta State Police Command condemned the actions of the hoodlums and warned that criminal elements who attempt to exploit festive periods to unleash violence or attack security personnel will face the full weight of the law.

Police confirmed that normalcy has been restored in Asaba, with intensified patrols and continuous surveillance still in place.

Residents were urged to celebrate responsibly and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
